How many hours a day are best for hydrogen inhalation? The latest 2026 group standard gives an authoritative answer

Hydrogen-oxygen inhalation therapy has grown increasingly popular in recent years and become a new option for respiratory health management in many households. But the question many people care most about is: how long each day of hydrogen-oxygen inhalation is needed to be effective? Is there a standard to follow?

In June 2026, the China Research Hospital Association officially released the country's first national group standard for hydrogen-oxygen medicine — the General Specification for Clinical Application of Hydrogen-Oxygen Mixed Gas Inhalation Therapy (standard number: T/CRHA 316—2026) — which gives a clear answer.

The group standard sets the "golden duration": no less than 4 hours per day, with 8 hours of overnight inhalation recommended

The General Specification for Clinical Application of Hydrogen-Oxygen Mixed Gas Inhalation Therapy clearly stipulates that hydrogen-oxygen mixed gas inhalation is managed by cumulative daily duration; cumulative daily use must be no less than 4 hours and may be divided into sessions; when the patient can tolerate wearing a nasal oxygen tube or nasal mask overnight, continuous overnight inhalation of 8 hours is recommended.

This standard was drafted under the joint lead of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (National Respiratory Medical Center), Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and Shanghai Asclepius Meditec, and compiled with the participation of more than 20 renowned Class A tertiary hospitals and authoritative research institutions nationwide, providing an authoritative, unified normative basis for the clinical application of hydrogen-oxygen inhalation therapy.

Why More Than 4 Hours?

Hydrogen-oxygen medical research confirms that hydrogen-oxygen inhalation has a clear "dose effect" — the higher the inhalation flow and the longer the duration, the more pronounced the effect tends to be. This is closely tied to the mechanism of hydrogen molecules' selective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action: hydrogen, the smallest molecule in nature, can easily penetrate cell membranes, selectively neutralize harmful free radicals, regulate gene expression, and promote antioxidant enzyme activity. Only sustained, sufficient inhalation can fully bring out its biological effects and improve the body's oxidative-stress and inflammatory state.

How to Choose a Compliant, Efficient Hydrogen Inhalation Device?

Once the duration is clear, choosing a compliant device is equally critical. Academician Zhong Nanshan solemnly reminded at the 7th National Hydrogen Biomedical Conference that hydrogen-oxygen medical research must use devices recognized by the National Medical Products Administration and must not use industrial hydrogen gas. When choosing a compliant hydrogen-oxygen device, look for the following three points:

National Class III medical device certification: on the NMPA official website, only two hydrogen-oxygen inhalation device registration certificates can currently be found — "国械注准20233081929" and "国械注准20203080066" — and the registrant for both is Shanghai Asclepius Meditec Co., Ltd.

High-concentration, high-flow ratio: the Asclepius hydrogen-oxygen machine uses a high-concentration ratio of 66.6% hydrogen + 33.3% oxygen, with a flow of ≥3000ml/min; multiple clinical studies have used these parameters, ensuring the dose effect is fully realized.

Safety technology assurance: the Asclepius hydrogen-oxygen machine uses the proprietary alkaline biocompatible conduction technology, achieving a medical-grade electrolysis solution that "uses no membrane and adds no alkali," avoiding the potential health risks of PFAS proton-membrane technology and ensuring safe use at the source.

Any health intervention rests on the two core elements of "dose" and "standards." The release of the latest 2026 group standard marks hydrogen-oxygen medicine's move from exploratory practice toward standardized application. By following scientific guidance and choosing compliant devices, you can truly bring out the clinical value of hydrogen-oxygen inhalation and build a solid line of defense for respiratory health.
